Debunking the Myth: Why We Can't Sing From Our Diaphragm

The concept of "singing from the diaphragm" is a prevalent yet inaccurate notion. While the idea emphasizes the importance of breath management in singing, it creates a misleading image of the process. Here's why singing directly from the diaphragm isn't anatomically possible, and what to think about instead.

  • The Diaphragm's Role: The diaphragm is a dome-shaped muscle separating the chest and abdominal cavities. During inhalation the diaphragm contracts drawing air into the lungs.  The diaphragm relaxes during exhalation and therefore is not an active participant in the process. While singing, one controls exhalation through a coordinated process that includes muscles of the ribcage, abdomen, pelvic floor, and even back. This coordinated action helps control the rate of airflow and the pressure within the lungs, allowing for sustained singing and nuanced phrasing. I work with many singers who stiffen their core muscles and/or try to pull the muscles in to force more sound out of their instrument. The resulting sound is forced, strained, and often sharp. I teach students to relax their core upon inhalation and find a balanced approach to managing airflow while singing.


  • The Vocal Folds Take Center Stage: Sound production happens in the larynx, where the vocal folds vibrate due to air flowing across the edges (Bernoulli's principle). By regulating the engagement of the core muscles, one can control the air pressure and flow rate. If an individual desires singing with a powerful voice, they should learn to work with the natural resonance of the vocal tract to boost overtones or “the ring of the voice.”


  • Terminology Tweak:  A More precise phrase for describing the intended outcome would be “optimize your vocal resonance”  Good vocal projection relies on creating an acoustic environment in which the vibrations emitted by the vocal folds are synchronized with the resonant frequencies of the vocal tract. When synchronization happens certain bands of frequencies are amplified and others are reduced, dampening interference. This environment can be achieved by learning to optimize a series of adjustments to the vocal tract over a wide range of frequencies. In my teaching studio this science based approach leads to less frustration and faster progress of my singing students.

So, next time you hear the cue to "sing from your diaphragm, remember its role is gathering the breath, not about where the sound originates. Focus on managing your breath with dynamic core stability and optimizing your vocal resonance for a supported and powerful voice!
